Superman: The Genesis of a Legend

Superman painting by Hugh J. Ward

Superman is easy to take for granted. He is one of the most well-known and popular characters of all time, known by all and loved by most. It almost seems as if the colorful, caped symbol of truth, justice and the American way has simply always been around. But in true superhero fashion, he has an origin story.

It all began with Jerome “Jerry” Siegel and Joseph “Joe” Shuster, two residents of Cleveland, Ohio. Siegel had been a resident of Cleveland since birth, and Shuster (originally from Toronto, Canada) had moved there with his family when was ten years old. They had much in common: both shared the plight of being small, poor, and unpopular; both were Jewish; both were avid fans of science fiction; both had an interest in the newspaper business; and both had artistic skills and ambitions. Siegel had already written and published (using a hectograph) the science fiction fanzine Cosmic Stories. Shuster had been drawing on every piece of paper he could get his hands on for years. It seems a matter of fate that they would meet and combine their talents.

Glenda Farrell: In Her Own Words

Glenda Farrell Portrait

Who better is there to tell about Glenda Farrell’s life, experiences, and opinions than Glenda Farrell herself? While I was conducting research for my article “Glenda Farrell: Her Life and Legacy”, I discovered a wealth of Glenda Farrell interviews. They not only contained much information about Glenda herself, but also some rare and interesting information about early 20th century theater and the Golden Age of Hollywood. So, I decided to create a companion piece to “Glenda Farrell: Her Life and Legacy”: a page about Glenda Farrell’s life, experiences, opinions, and knowledge, as told by herself. The result turned out to be almost overwhelming in terms of length, so if you feel daunted by the length, feel free to read it in increments (the pictures on this page make good chapter marks) or read just the topics you find most interesting (each quote or interview snippet is preceded by a brief introduction in bold-faced letters).

Glenda Farrell: Her Life and Legacy

Glenda Farrell’s name is not a very well-known one these days. The average person has heard of Fay Wray, Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, and numerous other classic actresses, but not Glenda Farrell. Many classic film enthusiasts are familiar with her, but to the average person of today, her name does not ring a bell. For that reason, I have undertaken to write an article about her life and legacy. It’s a little long, but that’s because I feel that it needs to be, as few people know much about Glenda Farrell and not much has been written about her in the past (compared to more famous actresses, anyway). If you look at the bottom of this page, you will also find links to some interesting Glenda Farrell resources from around the web.

If you like this article, you may also be interested in my companion piece, “Glenda Farrell: In Her Own Words”.
